Employment Process Frequently Asked Questions
Finding a Job
Our career site and job postings are located at Virginia Tech Jobs. You must apply to the specific job opening(s) for which you are interested. This must be completed through the applicant tracking system. Only applicants who apply online through the applicant tracking system will be considered for employment. Unsolicited applications/resumes for unspecified positions are not accepted.
Notify the hiring department or the Divison of Human Resources prior to the application close/review date if you need assistance with the application process.
There are filters located on the left of the jobs search page.
There are filters located on the left side of the jobs search page to locate jobs that match your interests. These filters include category, department, employment type, location, and senior management area.
We encourage you to apply for positions that align with your experience, education, and qualifications. Applying for another position does not impact your chances of moving through the hiring process for jobs you may have already applied for. Each job advertisement includes a minimum qualifications section, so please take a moment to review these requirements and ensure your background meets them before applying.
Our hiring teams review applications based on the experience and/or education demonstrated in relation to the specific requirements of each position. Taking the time to apply for positions that are a strong match for your qualifications can help ensure your application receives the appropriate consideration.
Yes, all Virginia Tech non-student positions are posted to the Virginia Tech jobs site. For student employment questions and links please visit student employment at Virginia Tech.
There are two different types of "dates" that we use when refering to job postings; closing dates and review dates. A Close Date means that the advertisement will no longer be available on the job site and no one will be able to apply after the close date. A Review Date means that the hiring department will start screening applications on this date and preparing for the interview process. If a viable candidate is found during the initial review, applications submitted after the review date may not be considered.
Signing up for job alerts allows you to get weekly updates for jobs posted that match your selected criteria. You are able to filter by category, location, and senior management area. Multiple job alerts are allowed.
Below are some additional resources to help understand the differences:

No. Once you submit your application materials your documents are locked and cannot be edited. This is to ensure that everyone in the screening process is evaluating the same information that you have submitted.
Some jobs are filled quickly while others may take a few months. Many factors go into creating a timeline such as availability of search committee members, applicant schedules, and room availability. Only applicants selected for an interview will be contacted. Those who do not receive an interview will be notified once the position has been filled.
Outside of the communication provided once your application status is changed by the hiring department, there is no communication to the applicant. Those selected for an interview will hear from the hiring department, but if you are seeking more information please contact the hiring department directly. If you feel you need to make contact with the hiring manager or the department, use good judgment in determining the way you contact and the number of times you follow up. “In Process” means that the search is still underway and no offer has been accepted. “Job Filled” means that an applicant has been chosen and hired.
